Embrace God’s Discipline

LA CircleFew in our culture like to be disciplined. But, discipline is an important part of life. And to benefit from it, there are two “discipline” truths that have to be accepted.

  1. You don’t have to LIKE the discipline to RECEIVE the discipline
  2. You do have to RECEIVE discipline before you can GROW from discipline

Dig into God’s word and you will find that His discipline is proof of His love. Accept His correction and you are accepting His love.

In this all-out match against sin, others have suffered far worse than you, to say nothing of what Jesus went through—all that bloodshed! So don’t feel sorry for yourselves. Or have you forgotten how good parents treat children, and that God regards you as his children?

My dear child, don’t shrug off God’s discipline,
but don’t be crushed by it either.
It’s the child he loves that he disciplines;
the child he embraces, he also corrects.

God is educating you; that’s why you must never drop out. He’s treating you as dear children. This trouble you’re in isn’t punishment; it’s training, the normal experience of children. Only irresponsible parents leave children to fend for themselves. Would you prefer an irresponsible God? We respect our own parents for training and not spoiling us, so why not embrace God’s training so we can truly live? While we were children, our parents did what seemed best to them. But God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God’s holy best. At the time, discipline isn’t much fun. It always feels like it’s going against the grain. Later, of course, it pays off handsomely, for it’s the well-trained who find themselves mature in their relationship with God. Hebrews 12:4-11

Discipline is uncomfortable but that is the point. Taking us out of our comfort zone FORCES us to see ourselves. Only when we see clearly can we grow completely.

Don’t be afraid of God’s discipline. He doesn’t react as a man…out of emotion and unreasonable anger…but RESPONDS out of love and hope for our future.

Joyful are those you discipline, LORD, those you teach with your instructions. You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is dug to capture the wicked. Psalm 94:12-13

Those who are disciplined are blessed. They find relief and protection in days of trouble so focus on responding in joy when facing discipline.

“God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him? Job 36:22

The one who disciplines is also the one who teaches. Submit to the discipline and the lessons are powerful.

Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. Deuteronomy 8:5

Want proof that you are God’s child…His son or daughter? Look for His discipline. Make yourself a true child and receive His correction.

The road to life is a disciplined life; ignore correction and you are lost for good. Proverbs 10:17

Your best life is a disciplined life…take God’s discipline and live self-disciplined.
